In the middle of the night, while they are sleeping, a strange and little figure opens the door to their room. Quietly and slowly, it goes to Luke's bed, climbing onto it.
The strange little creature looks at Luke in his sleep, and slowly, approaches a paw to the boy's face…
Suddenly, the paw of the creature hits Luke's head, and takes off his hat. Luke wakes up in the moment, seeing how the little creature has hit hat on his head.
"Hey!" says Luke at the strange thing "give this back!" The strange creature looks at him, mocking, and then tries to go to the door. Luke goes after him, waking up the professor and Flora.
"My word…" says Layton, getting up from his bed, along with Flora. Both of them follow Luke, who's running trough the corridor, pursuing the creature that looks like a blue bunny. The blue bunny keeps jumping with Luke's hat, but looks like he's leading them into another place. The whole group go out of the hotel, going into another more little.
Once they are inside, Luke looks around him trying to find the blue bunny with his hat. But suddenly, the door closes behind them, locking itself, and not leaving them to leave the house.
"Ok, this joke went so far! Give me my hat back, and then let us go!" says Luke, very angry. But Layton puts an arm in front of him, stopping him and looking around. "I'm so sorry for my friend, he doesn't like when someone takes his hat. I don't want to hurt you, we only came to solve a strange mystery here. We are not enemies" says Layton, in a calm voice.
After some minutes, the blue bunny comes out from some wooden boxes. He looks surprised, and slowly goes where Layton is.
"You….will solve the mystery inside this town?" says all of sudden the bunny. Layton and others looks so surprised to see that a bunny, after being surprised for being a blue bunny, can talk.
"You can talk in our language…" says Luke, taking his hat back, carefully. "Well, I can tell the same about you. Fran told me about you. You talked with him in….our language" says the bunny. Luke looks confused, but Layton soon realizes who Fran is. "So, the dog's name is Fran. Thanks to him, we were able to come here."
"You have to leave this town. There's no mystery, just people who can't come back. You must leave this place and go home" says the bunny. "I'm afraid we can't. I….we have some motives to solve it." Says the professor, in a very polite way.
The blue bunny frowns, but nods.
"Sorry for…before. My name is Kol. As you can see I am a…blue bunny thing. And your names?"
"I'm Hershel Layton, and they are Luke Triton and Flora Reinhold. Nice to meet you" says the professor. Both teen nods as a salutation. Kol does the same.
"But Kol, what happens in this town? Why is all…alone?" asks Flora. Kol looks at her. "It's not empty. Only humans had to leave, in order to save us…"
" "Us"? who are you?" asks Luke. Kol look at him. "We are the companions of the people in this town…well…we were. The humans had to leave to protect us from the malign spirit of shadows. They left because the spirit of shadows told them to leave or he was going to eat us. All humans had to leave behind their houses and all their memories…now we live here by ourselves"
"But….this is so sad…" says Flora, feeling bad for them. Layton seems to be thinking in something. ""Tell me, please, when humans went away?"
Kol looks at him. "Around…120 years ago, why?" Layton adjusts his hat "Did you live all this time?" Kol looks surprised, and nods. "Yes, I'm one of the…guardians of the town, if you can say it in that way. But I don't have power enough to stop the spirit of shadows. He's now under the grounds, sleeping and waiting"
"Waiting for what?" asks Layton. "For any human who has the same ability of the inhabitants of this town. But I can't remember this ability" answers Kol. Layton thinks again about it. All this seems to start to be solved by itself. But still he needs the clue to know what ability is and how is this spirit of shadows.
They decide to go back to the hotel. While they are walking, thy are talking about the world outside and the town, not being aware that someone is watching them.
"It seems you came after all…Layton…"
